During this project I will focus on the intelligent behavior
of the boat. I want to accomplish this by creating behavior for different parts
of the boat, and when all different parts come together it results in
autonomous sailing drone. To accomplish this I need to design the interaction
of the boat with the wind and waves. Also I want to get more experience with building
prototypes with high quality and drawing 3d sketches in SolidWorks. Also I want
to create a wider view on the protei project as a whole and develop a concept
which involves user interaction with my system.
Ideas and concepts
The development of the concept and user involvement is strongly connected with this competency area. Also the brainstorms in the (kan niet op het woord komen maar het project in 1 week uitvoeren fase) were important for me. I researched different methods and techniques and applied several of them which were very helpful

Integrating technology
will be an important part of the development of an autonomous sailing boat. I will not focus on this but for me as a designer it is important to work with technology and to be strongly dependent on the available technology. Making intelligent behaviors for each part of the boat will be the biggest challenge.
User focus and

The design for this boat should be made from within the perspective of the user. These boats will clean-up oil spills so the health of the staff on boats which clean up the spills now will not be endangered but also all the people and animals ashore will be less harmed by the oil spills. Therewithal the user is also very important in the development of the concept and how the behavior of the boat will be influenced by the user. These decisions must be made with a strong user focus.

when I start to look into the business model of protei I can address this competency area in this project. I can research how people at the other side of the world want to build there protei and what there motivation is to do things and adapt also the interface to this fact. But I think I will not address this during this project, but I will discuss this with my coach.

The protei community is not a standard business platform but a opensource hardware community, this however doesn’t mean you can’t make profit of the products which are created on this platform. Only another approach is necessary, in this project I will look at this but it’s not a very important part for me yet.

Form and senses
This competency area isn’t very important for the boat itself, the form has to be mainly functional, abstracting these functions to their basics helps making the boat more simple, also the interaction should be designed and the senses of the boat need to be somehow translated to an interface which is easy to understand and influence. Which is very important for the user experience in the end.

Multi-disciplinary Teamwork and communication
In this individual project, I will work on my own project, but be closely related to my team and also the other teams and master students working on this project. Also managing the contact with the client and community of Protei will be done by me. The goal is to also use this community in the design process and design decisions but the quality of the feedback need to be good and given fast (not after several weeks) to be used in the design process. If this is also feasible needs to be seen.

In this project I started with a pressure cooker, a new technique for me to start a project which helped me a lot. The research phase is largely finished now but I still have to find out how to make a object intelligent, what is the standard for this and how can you program these self-learning-algorithms. To find this out I want to speak with experts and read documentation about these technologies (already read “making things talk” to address this).

Since this is an individual project I will work alone on my prototype and concept, but I will continue to use the input of experts and fellow students in my project to learn from them and see other valuable insights.

What I want to do with programming behavior can only be done, if I understand the complex system behind sailing. This complex interaction between the boat, water and the wind is constantly changing and I need to analyze this and come up with a set of parameters to control the boat. After this I also have to find out how to adjust and influence these parameters and which data I will need to adjust this to the right value. Building a complex system requires thus also to analyzing and understand the system you are building in.
